There are a million and one ways you can live a happier life, but let’s face it, do you really have time to sift through all of them and incorporate them into your daily life? Do what you feel is best for you but if you want to be happy today, try the adding the following simple strategies to your routine.
1 – Exercise
We all know the long-term benefits of exercise; our bodies get stronger, our body systems function more efficiently, and it’s easier to control our weight, for instance. But there is also another benefit of exercise that is immediate. When you work-out, especially when performing light cardio, it increases endorphins in your body that instantly boosts your mood. Try to get your heart pumping first thing in the morning. This will elevate your mood for the day.
2 – Meditate
Spending some time each day meditating will calm your mind, increase your energy, and keep you focused. We tend to get stressed and uptight during the day and mediation is a great way to keep us grounded and in peace. The benefits of meditating, even if only for a few minutes, are amazing.
3 – Live In The Moment
Another great way to be happy today is to live in the moment. Take a few minutes of your time to sit and do absolutely nothing. Don’t think about your meeting this afternoon. Don’t think about what you did last night, just focus on the present moment. What is around you? What colors do you see? What sounds do you hear? Living in the moment helps us forget all of our stresses and brings us into the present.
4 – Gratitude
Sometimes we forget the great things we have in our lives when we are so focused on our issues. If you want to be truly happy, you have to learn how to be grateful for what you have. You will always want more, or something different. It’s human nature. So it’s important to recognize all the things we have at this moment that make us happy. Take some time to write in a gratitude journal every night before bed or say a gratitude prayer each morning as I do.
5 – Do Something Kind For Others
Studies show that doing something kind for others increases our own happiness. Think about the feeling you had the last time someone was so grateful for something you did for them. It is a wonderful feeling knowing you made someone’s day. Why not have this feeling every day? Do something kind today and every day. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive. A simple call to check on someone or bringing a cup of coffee to a friend will do.
6 – Show Yourself Some Love
When was the last time you gave yourself a good pat on the back? We beat ourselves up so much that we forget to recognize all the good that we have done. Today, write out 5 things you love about yourself. It doesn’t matter what it is. It can be something as simple as the awesome way you comb your hair. There is no excuse not to come up with at least 5 things. Each day, read your list. Sounds silly but you will be amazed how this simple act of showing yourself some love will increase your happiness.
