Stop Getting Mad Over Little Things – 4 Hacks

May 9, 2023

It is not uncommon to get upset over things that do not really matter. It happens to us all. Maybe you had a bad day and your husband not putting his dishes away pushed you over the edge. Perhaps your tiredness caused you to snap at a coworker for not getting you the information you needed fast enough. Small things can and will happen that upsets us and that is normal. However, if you find that small inconveniences send you over the edge more often than you would like, this article is for you. Here are some effective strategies to help you stop getting mad over little things.

How To Stop Letting Small Things Upset You

1. Rate Everything

Rating

Stop getting mad over little things by rating everything that bothers you. When you find yourself getting upset, stop, and give it a number on a scale from 1 – 10. 1 is not that big of a deal and 10 would be life-changing. Decide that if something is a 5 and below, you will let it go. Is your husband not loading the dishwasher really a 10? Probably not. Are your kids not picking up their toys, really an 8? Most likely not. React accordingly.

2. Stop Getting Mad Over Little Things By Asking, “Will This Matter In a Year?”

Stop getting mad over little things by questioning.

Most of the time things that upset us are temporary. They are short-term inconveniences but in the moment, it may be hard to realize this. A great way to put things into perspective is to ask yourself if it will matter in a year. Most of the time you will find that it will not. As a matter of fact, it probably will not matter in a month or even a week from now so why let these small things upset you now?

3. Stay Focused On The Positive

Another way to stop getting mad over little things is by focusing on the positive. If you can spend more time each day focused on the positive, then small things won’t bother you as much. We usually get mad about small inconveniences because throughout the day we pile small stressors on top of each other until finally it spills over and it’s just too much to stand anymore. We can reduce this pile and keep things from boiling over by proactively finding the positive in our day. Reading something inspirational every day, practicing gratitude, and living in the moment are great ways to cultivate a positive attitude.

4. Stop Getting Mad Over Little Things By Expressing Your Concerns

Stop bottling everything up. If you are used to keeping things in, then you are more susceptible to snapping over little things. Instead of holding in your frustration the million times your spouse forgot to pick up their socks, say something. Stop getting mad over little things by expressing your concerns as they arise.

Conclusion

Life is too short and time is too precious to sweat the small stuff.  Control your emotions and stop getting mad over little things by rating everything, and by putting things in perspective by asking, “Will this matter in a year?” You can also stay focused on the positive and expressing your concerns as they happen.
