Setbacks will happen, it’s inevitable. What we do after they occur is the important part. It’s easy to say, “get back on that horse,” but in reality, many people can’t move on that easy. Especially when you have multiple setbacks in the same area of life. Here are 5 ways to help you bounce back from a setback.”
1 – Change Your Mindset To Overcome a Setback
There are basically two types of mindsets; a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Fixed mindset individuals feel like success is limited to “special” people. That only certain people benefit from wealth, happiness, and prosperity. “It’s just not in the cards for them.” Growth mindset individuals know that even though they may not be the most talented, or have as many opportunities, they can still accomplish anything as long as they put effort towards it. They can also overcome a setback fairly easily. The truth is that we each have both mindsets depending on the area of our life. If you find that you have a fixed mindset in an area, work towards changing that mindset.
2 – Don’t Overthink
Sometimes things just happen. Don’t get caught up over-analyzing what went wrong. Reliving the past kills your motivation and prevents you from moving forward. If you are a chronic overthinker, it will take time to overcome it but you will with a little bit of effort.
3 – Take Some Time To Refocus
Sometimes you need to take a step back and forget about it to overcome a setback. There are benefits from getting right back at it, but that doesn’t mean it’s always the right way. Especially when you keep failing at the same thing. Set aside a predetermined amount of time to relax and DE-stress. Don’t wait too long or procrastination and fear may kick in. Give yourself a couple of days or a week to reevaluate your goals.
4 – Reach Out For Support To Overcome a Setback
Another great way to overcome a setback is to reach out for support. Talk to your family, friends, or life coach. They can help keep you grounded and offer sound advice. If applicable, look for groups and organizations that offer support for your issues. Many times they are full of members facing the same issue as you that can offer great words of wisdom from their own past experiences.
5 – Look For The Positive To Bounce Back From A Setback
All failures and setbacks provide a valuable lesson. What can you learn? What can you do differently? By trying to find the positive, you’ll begin to find the motivation to move forward. It’s important to act on what you find. Change what needs to be changed, otherwise, you will continue to fail.
It is not easy to overcome a setback, but it’s necessary for success. The next time you fall, remember to change your mindset, don’t overthink, take some time to refocus, get support, and look for the positive.
