8 Ways To Improve Your Home Environment
1 – Keep Your Home Clean
Make sure your home is clean and clutter-free. Do little things every day that will keep things neat and tidy. Have rules such as: Never leave dishes in the sink overnight, put clean laundry away right away, or picking up the room before going to another area. Having a messy home makes our minds cluttered as well. Try to do a more thorough cleaning once a week to keep things manageable. I personally feel better all-around when my home is organized and clean. I feel more productive and motivated.
2 – Decorate With Emotional Pieces
Many people decorate their homes with generic paintings or pictures just because they want something on the wall. Your home is supposed to feel welcoming and joyful. Why waste your wall space on a picture of a house on a prairie? Unless these types of things “speak” to you or give you some kind of emotional response, get rid of them. Place pictures, art, and other decorations in your home that make you feel good when you see them. Try to keep themes (color palette, style, etc.) a little similar so that your home isn’t just a mess of colors and non-matching decor. This can cause your home to feel cluttered.
3 – Have A Quiet Space
Improve your home environment by having a quiet space. It doesn’t matter how big or small your home is, you can make one room or spot, a place of peace and quiet. Don’t be ashamed to make it your bathroom if you have to! Use this quiet space to calm your nerves or just relax when you need it. Make it your sanctuary.
4 – Get Into A Routine
Your home life should have a set of routines. This is especially important in the mornings and evenings. Having a morning ritual will help you get your day off on the right foot. Your mood will increase and you’ll have a much more productive day. Evening routines are great to help you unwind after a long day. They also help you get more, and better quality sleep.
5 – Set Clear Rules And Boundaries
Your home is also home to your family. In order for things to remain a safe, peaceful environment for all those living there, rules and boundaries should be set. How strict or lenient is up to you but everyone needs to know what is acceptable and what is not. You can have rules such as no yelling in the house, respect each other’s property, keep your room cleaned, etc. Print these rules out and put them in a place where everyone can see them.
6 – Use Scented Aromas
Improve your home environment by using candles, oil diffusers, or potpourri. I absolutely love coming home to a nice smelling home. It calms me and brightens my mood no matter how crappy my day was. Here are some scents you can use for different purposes:
- Vanilla: Boost your mood.
- Lavender: Helps you relax and sleep.
- Jasmine: Helps with depression.
- Chamomile: Anxiety and worry.
7 – Have Family Rituals
Family rituals are always fun and get passed down from generation to generation. If you don’t have any family rituals, start some. You can have a family game night or a family video night. Maybe you can go to an event every year together. Having rituals creates a stronger bond between family members.
8 – Have No-Electronics Times or Zones
Many people at home don’t have a chance to connect like they could in the old days. Everyone carries a phone on them or some kind of electronic device that takes up all their attention. Improve your home environment by reconnecting with each other during certain times or certain places in the house. Maybe you could have a strict no cell-phone policy at the dinner table. Or perhaps there can be a rule that no electronics are allowed in the family room.
Conclusion
Your home should be your happy place. You should feel at peace there and be proud of what you have built with your family. If not, try some or all of these strategies to improve your home environment.
