It’s perfectly normal to be negative from time to time. The problem happens when you constantly dwell on what can’t be done or focus too much on the negative aspects of basically everything. Is this you? “I don’t have the time.” , “I’m not good enough.” “Things don’t happen for me.” If you are an excuse King or Queen then the following 6 strategies will help you to stop being negative.
“Nothing positive will come from being negative, and nothing negative will come from being positive.”
Practice Mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness means living in the moment. If you want to stop being negative, you need to focus on the here and now. Not what tomorrow brings, not what tonight brings, not even what next hour brings. Enjoy every moment and the things around you.
Avoid Negative Social Media Posts
Statistics show that most people check their social media feeds as soon as they get up. If you are bombarded by negative posts first thing, chances are your day will start off on a negative note. It’s not possible to eliminate all negative posts that you see but you can cut a great number of them from your view. Unfollow people who constantly post negative news or constantly harp on how bad they have it in life. If you can’t unfollow them, then unsubscribe from them so you won’t see their posts in your feed. Facebook has this option, and you can use Twitter lists to separate the positive from the negative.
Avoid Other Negative Nancy’s
Monkey does what monkey sees. You are the sum of your friends. If your friends and the people you hang out with are always negative, you will be negative as well. Hang out with positive people and those that have solutions, instead of problems.
Get a Hobby
If you want to stop being negative, sometimes all you have to do is simply get a hobby. Find something that interests you and dive into it. This will keep your mind focused on something new and positive.
Positive Affirmations
Positive Affirmations are an excellent way to stay positive. Never underestimate the power of spoken words. If you constantly speak out loud negativity, negative things will come your way. Make a commitment right now to limit the negative things that you say. Instead, replace them with positive affirmations. Come up with a few affirmations that will put you in a positive mood. Repeat them throughout the day or when you are feeling especially negative.
Practice Gratitude
People who are constantly negative never really take the time to appreciate the things that they do have. If you can only adopt one of these strategies to stop being negative, it should be this one. Keep a gratitude journal, or keep a list of things you are grateful for and read it every day. Things will get better, but things could be worse. Count your blessings.
Use these strategies to stop being negative starting today. Don’t continue to be a Debbie Downer. Be a positive force and spread good vibes to those around you.
